In early June 2006, the Network Capacity Group of the Safe Mobility and HIV/AIDS Prevention Project Office of Aihui District of Heihe City in Heilongjiang Province went to Blagoveshchensk, a Russian city on the other side across the border, to carry out comprehensive IEC activities on HIV/AIDS prevention with local peer educators respectively in department stores, markets for products of light industry, clothing markets, Friendship Fruit Wholesale Market and other places. They distributed 2,000 IEC folders, 400 boxes of condoms and 560 pieces of souvenirs. About 1,500 Chinese and 100 Russians received relative information through the activity. Surveys by questionnaire were conducted before and after the IEC activities, with the result that percentage of awareness about the three channels of HIV/AIDS transmission had been increased from 74.4% before the activity to 96.7% afterwards. The IEC activities had not only increased people's awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention, but also enriched the cultural life of the cross-border Chinese in the city.
